A Brief History of Jaguar

Jaguar is a luxury vehicle brand of Jaguar Land Rover, a British multinational car manufacturer. The Jaguar first appeared in September 1935 as a model name of the Swallow Sidecar Company. On March 23, 1945, the Swallow Sidecar Company owners agreed to change the name of the company to Jaguar Cars Ltd. Jaguar made a name for itself with the production of several successful sports cars, including the Jaguar XK120, Jaguar XK140, Jaguar XK150, and the Jaguar E-Type. The Jaguar slogan for a number of years was “Grace, Space, Pace.” In 1951 and 1953, Jaguar won the Le Mans 24 hours race. Jaguar purchased Daimler (not to be confused with Daimler-Benz or Daimler-AG) in 1960, and used THe Daimler marque as a brand name for their most luxurious saloons.

Pressed Steel Company, that made all of Jaguar’s car bodies, was bought out by British Motor Corporation in 1965. Lyons, co-founder of Jaguar, became concerned that this would result in a financial burden for the company, and accepted an offer to merge with British Motor Corporation to form British Motor (Holdings) Limited. British Motor Holdings then merged with Leyland Motor Corporation Ltd. and became British Leyland Motor Corporation in 1968. However, this merge was unsuccessful and Jaguar was floated off as a separate company in July 1984 and Sir John Egan was appointed as chairman. Jaguar became part of Ford Motor Company’s new Premiere Automotive Group.

  • Integrity: Business should be done in a fair, honest, and transparent way. Everything Jaguar does stands the test of public scrutiny.
  • Understanding: Jaguar cares about their customers and colleagues all over the world.
  • Excellence: “Good enough” is never good enough. Jaguar aims for the highest standards possible in the quality of their cars, services, and products, and in the way they work.
  • Unity: Success is a result of building strong, mutually beneficial relationships with their colleagues, partners, and customers all over the world.
  • Responsibility: Jaguar is responsible for the countries, communities, and places in which they work. Their aim is to ensure everyone benefits from working with them.

Jaguar Cars are produced on a state of the art production line in Castle Bromwich. Multi-million dollar machines and high tech robots work alongside thousands of workers in perfect sync. Grant McPherson, Jaguar Director of Operations, says, “Jaguar has always stood for engineering excellence and beautiful design. Our role is to deliver the team’s design intention, every time with every car. It’s our job to achieve a strict specification and, for me, quality is the ability to repeatedly achieve that specification. It’s that attention to detail that we instill here. We’re building luxury cars.” Each Jaguar car goes through thousands of precision processes and quality checks, and no car is released until it has passed all these tests.
